A Dying Breed. The Doctor that listens

I think in the minds of most patients, there is not such a clear
distinction between talk therapy and psychiatry. When I was looking
for a therapist a few years ago, I started looking up and phoning
psychiatrists, and they would ask me about the medication I was
taking. My PCP is the one who told me that I needed a therapist.

Years later when looking for a psychiatrist, I looked up some reviews
and many patients gave terrible reviews to the psychiatrists because
they felt the psychiatrist didn’t care to listen to their problems.
And at first, I was guided by these reviews. When I met with my
therapist, she explained to me that although patients are looking for
someone to talk to, it was not appropriate for a psychiatrist to do
this as he/she is responsible for MEDICATION ONLY. So when I came to
see you, I had that idea firmly placed in my mind.

Interestingly enough, my therapist thought that the first report you
had sent her had the tone of a psychotherapist.

I think you’re a dying breed, Dr. Spirt.
